    Everythingabouthimwasoldexcepthiseyesandtheywerethesamecolorastheseaandwerecheerfulandundefeated.

    「Santiago,」theboysaidtohimastheyclimbedthebankfromwheretheskiffwashauledup.「Icouldgowithyouagain.We』vemadesomemoney.」

    Theoldmanhadtaughttheboytofishandtheboylovedhim.

    「No,」theoldmansaid.「You』rewithaluckyboat.Staywiththem.」

    Whenthewindwasintheeastasmellcameacrosstheharbourfromthesharkfactory;buttodaytherewasonlythefaintedgeoftheodourbecausethewindhadbackedintothenorthandthendroppedoffanditwaspleasantandsunnyontheTerrace.

    「Icanrememberthetailslappingandbangingandthethwartbreakingandthenoiseoftheclubbing.Icanrememberyouthrowingmeintothebowwherethewetcoiledlineswereandfeelingthewholeboatshiverandthenoiseofyouclubbinghimlikechoppingatreedownandthesweetbloodsmellalloverme.」

    「CanyoureallyrememberthatordidIjusttellittoyou?」

    Theoldmanlookedathimwithhissun-burned,confidentlovingeyes.
